Lindy, is the USA a supporter of democracy or not? If Taiwanese vote overwhelmingly for independence, then it's silly for the USA to reaffirm that they think Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China. <The Bush administration has reaffirmed repeatedly the principle that there is one China encompassing Taiwan and the mainland, but Chinese officials have called for the United States to do more. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has threatened to use military force to prevent it from becoming a fully independent nation. >

Similarly, Quebec is part of Canada and the USA recognizes Quebec as part of Canada. But if the Quebecois vote overwhelmingly for independence, then surely the USA would accept that, just as the rest of Canada would accept it.

Similarly, NZ voted for independence from New South Wales and Oz and the USA seems to think that's okay and both chose independence from Great Britain, though not yet from the Queen and NZ has just ditched the Privy Council as highest court.

It seems literally insane for Jiang Zemin's gang to threaten murder of those who wish to be independent.

I'd be surprised if the USA once again let a totalitarian state roll over a democratic country.
