Re: "I see you are also ignoring the military modernization and buildup of China the good old American consumer is financing..."

Actually, I addressed that when I said:

"National Security, particularly if cooperation and peace instead of war is the goal, should lie in a sort of "race to the bottom" which is not insane."

The best way to influence hearts and minds in China is to allow trading relationships to develop. Both sides benefit, and both sides become grateful. And yes, the poor among us in both countries benefit greatly from free trade. This will prove difficult to make up for within your fair trade scheme. Consumption will decline as prices are higher thanks to jobs kept due to "fair trade," and the poor will suffer in the marketplace. Try free trade and watch as low prices and foreign demand create an economic circumstance in which the former American shoemakers(for instance), find in the end that life is better for it.

I've already detailed how free trade replaces all those jobs you see as lost or given away. The world of trade is naturally in flux, and "fair trade" would seek to keep current status quo jobs while negating the benefits trading partners offer, negating lower priced goods for consumers world-wide, and yes, negating otherwise naturally occurring cooperation and gratitude among nations. Employing Free Trade, we can not only help lift countless Chinese out of poverty, we can help lift Americans out of poverty too(with lower priced goods on shelves).

Freedom Works,
