You couple these types of reports with the earlier article about our chosen Iraqi police planning the insurgent attacks, and you wonder if there is any way to "win" this thing. The opposition to, maybe the hatred of, the occupation seems to be growing every day. The problem is is that occupation is all the Iraqis know. Since the Mongols invaded in the 13th century, Iraq has been a colony......first the Mongols, then the Turks/Ottomen, then the Brits. When they finally got independent, they went from a monarchy to a dictatorship. There history does not make great groundwork for democracy. I see starting a democracy in Iraq akin to Tiffany's opening up a store in Harlem. Were they to do it, Tiffany's would have to employ huge levels of security. They would have to really get to understand the black culture and their particular taste in fine jewerlry. They would have to figure out how to deal with the lesser incomes of their surrounding neighbors and how to get affluent people from outside the neighborhood to come in and shop. It would take many years for the store to be successful And, of course, Tiffany's would never consider a Harlem store with Harlem's current demographics. They would be stupid to go through all that work for a few pennies profit. And compared to Iraq, a Tiffany's in Harlem is walk in the park. That's why Bush has used the buzz word democracy vis a vis Iraq. He knows for Americans that's the one word that makes all this mess worth the high price its exacting. And look what Bush's trip to Iraq has done for his supporters like Stevo Harris......he's in a swoon close to organism. My attitude is that if Americans keep falling for Bush's non stop BS including the democracy propoganda, and not realize that Bush has his own agenda, then we deserve everything we get...and be assured, there is a lot more downside to come. If the war for the "hearts and minds" of the Iraqi's is over, what's left but enforcing our will on an unwilling people? Just like history's other despots? You raise an interesting issue. I don't think Bush has the balls to be despotic.......at least not during the election year. I will be really surprised if he does. ted
