I've noticed the tilde file many times when working with office documents. The icon is very pale like hidden files and usually disappears after a document is saved. I always thought they were temp copies of the file I was working on. I have had one or two stick around but the original file seemed to be ok so I never tried to do anything with them. Thanks for the info.
