GST,

Don't pretend that China or even their communist leaders are that monolithic. There are always factions - liberals and conservatives (as it were) in every government.

China is running a trade surplus with the rest of the world and a huge one with the US in particular. Their economy would crumble overnight and they would return to the dark days of the 1960's if they attacked Taiwan.

We could replace the type of goods we get from China with those made elsewhere far easier than could replace a market with which they enjoy a 120B surplus.

And if you think we would be the only country upset at a unilateral Chinese attack - your kidding yourself.

John

ps did any of your trips involve Taiwan?

China would not be swayed by the threat of an Olympic boycott or condemnation from the international community if it decided to attack Taiwan, a Chinese general said in comments published as Premier Wen Jiabao prepares to visit Washington.

Perhaps not, but they would be swayed by the power of the U.S. military to intervene.

Hi GST; Re: "If anybody thinks China is bluffing on this issue -- think again."

The article quotes a Chinese general. That's not "China", it's just a guy speaking, and he's not even a politician.

If you want to scare yourself by listening to what the generals say, you should have heard what one of our guys said recently about Christianity and Islam, LOL.

The Taiwan / China stuff is being overblown just like the India / Pakistan stuff was over the past year. It's being done for local constituencies, but the leadership is not committed ideologues to the point of ruining their situation by resorting to war.

China "knows" that they will win in the end without the need for force.
