I have no fundamental disagreement with anything you say here. I have never suggested that it is wrong for the addicted to seek help, wherever they can find it. I objected to the characterization of addiction as a disease, which I feel diminishes the absolutely necessary acceptance of individual responsibility for one’s own condition, and to the use of “recovering addict” status as a tool to gain sympathy, especially when it is used by highly visible individuals.
