Why would China want to start to slow down their economy over a war for Taiwan..

For China this is not a matter of calculation. The Chinese do not merely claim that Taiwan is part of China -- they believe it 100% and have very deep emotions on this issue. As I said, if there are any fools in the White House who think otherwise, they should get a pink slip asap. China does not want war -- it is an insane prospect. But China will sacrifice whatever it takes, including millions of soldiers if that is what it comes to -- to keep their country intact as they see it.
