UPDATE - TriQuint lifts 4th-qtr outlook, may have profit
Wednesday December 10, 4:38 pm ET

(Recasts lead paragraph, adds more detail, stock price)
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 10 (Reuters) - TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (NasdaqNM:TQNT - News) on Wednesday raised its fourth-quarter financial outlook, saying demand is strong from the wireless phone market and that a one-time gain will help generate a net profit, instead of the loss it had expected.

The Hillsboro, Oregon-based chip maker said it expects to post revenue of $85 million to $87 million, operating income at break-even to a slight profit, net earnings per share of 3 cents to 4 cents and a net profit after tax of $4 million to $5 million. It also said it would have a gross margin of 32 percent to 33 percent.

That is up from the previous forecast of revenue of $80 million to $83 million, a net loss per share of 2 cents to 4 cents and gross margin of 30 percent to 32 percent.

Analysts, on average, were expecting the company to post revenue of $82.8 million and a loss of 3 cents a share, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc.

TriQuint's results will be boosted by a one-time gain of about $6 million resulting from the proceeds of a payment of a previously impaired note from an investment in a non-public company, net of other impairments.

For the first quarter, the company forecast revenue of $77 million to $80 million. Analysts, on average, were expecting revenue for that quarter of $71.6 million.

Shares of TriQuint rose to $7.30 in after-hours trade after a close of $6.99 on the Nasdaq.

UPDATE - Atmel says demand strong, raises revenue view
Wednesday December 10, 4:42 pm ET

(Updates with background, CEO comment, share price)
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Atmel Corp. (NasdaqNM:ATML - News), a maker of memory chips and custom semiconductors, on Wednesday raised its fourth-quarter revenue outlook on stronger-than-expected demand in almost all its markets, and said it expects a small quarterly net loss.

The San Jose, California-based chipmaker said it now expects December-quarter revenue to rise 7 percent to 10 percent from the previous quarter compared with an earlier forecast of revenue growth of 3 percent to 6 percent.

Atmel said it is seeing increased demand, most notably from its personal computer and consumer markets.

The rival of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - News), Infineon Technologies AG (XETRA:IFXGn.DE - News) and STMicroelectronics (Paris:STM.PA - News), said its fourth-quarter gross margins are also on track to be stronger than expected, reflecting increased utilization and stable pricing.

"Broad-based demand strength has been even stronger than we expected when, in October, we stated that the upturn for the next semiconductor cycle had arrived," George Perlegos, Atmel's president and chief executive, said in a statement.

"Virtually every product line has been at least slightly better than expected," he added. "Overall pricing has stabilized, and we anticipate that we will enjoy some pricing increases in the first quarter of 2004."

After Atmel raised its outlook, the company's shares rose to $5.74 in after-market trade from their close at $5.39 on Nasdaq.
