Mike, a good summary of the general American attitudes towards Iran/Iraq in the late '70s and 1980's. The fact is Americans do not pay attention to this stuff on a regular basis unless we are directly attacked, and even then it has to be pretty big and/or long-lasting, like the Embassy takeover in Tehran which put the lid on Jimmy Carter's Presidency, or 9/11. It always kind of amuses me to hear the rantings of CAIR et al about how Americans are anti-Muslim or anti-Arab. Fact is, before 9/11, I bet few Americans ever gave them thought one way or the other.

Most Americans had never heard of Iraq back then. I remember because I met a couple of people from Iraq and they were amazed that I knew where they were from. I do have a hard time believing that, for example, the average New York Jew felt any love for Saddam. After all, the Israelis bombed the Iraqi nuclear power plant in 1981.

The argument makes as much sense as arguing that we favored Pol Pot because he was fighting the North Vietnamese.

At any rate, at the time I was giving money to the Contras and to the Mujahideen, and praying for the downfall of the Soviet Union. Saddam has always been Stalin lite, never a hero of mine.

I did feel some sympathy for Reza Pahlavi.

People who admired Che Guevara, Castro, Danny Ortega, Allende, etc., may well have admired Saddam. I wouldn't know because I didn't hang out with people like that.
