If this open-ended 'War on terrorism' is anything like the Cold War (which seems the most appropriate comparison) it could easily go on for 30 to 50 years or more.

What about the 'War on drugs'? 80 some years and counting.

If all that is necessary to suspend the Constitution is for some ill-defined and open-ended period of hostilities to be underway (since we never DECLARE wars anymore)... then the Constitution will ALLWAYS be suspended.

A historical relic of a bygone era when we actually had a Republic, and not a Dictatorship.

What makes you think that some future President (say: an imaginary Hillery...) couldn't use the same 'power' to ban public ownership of guns... or preempt State laws... or any damn thing else they wanted to do --- if the Constitution isn't worth the paper it's written on?
