Bernard Baruch played deep but he did it on real knowledge of the people and often he backed them in their efforts and sought money/expertise for them as well. He recommended about ten deep plays as max..

Nothing wrong right now with playing the sector. especially since it's in a bull. also if there is a
Great Dane in the litter it does not hurt. Don't forget some people on this thread have been doing it for at least as many years as you have been born, and they are not doing it with play money.

All the eggs in one basket may guarantee the great reward but only if you are nostradamus.. my question is who is your independent geologist advising you? With 30 years in exploration in SA? never quote the company men, they are selling stock, lets face it.

Want to play people? I say perhaps one in 4 here. Lowell. Now there is a bear of a name.

just to be completely clear:

4 to 6 PBM stocks
1, would like 2, O&G stocks
50%+ cash and rising (= all of my spring 2002 capital and 50% of my spring02-autumn03 gains)

(NB this is just the 'speculative' marketable part of my portfolio, so i dont count bullion or illiquid assets such as private company shareholdings)

the beauty of krugerands is you dont have to be a geologist to know what is hiding under the shiny surface showings (tho buying from a reputable dealer does help!)

Michael - I appreciate your concerns for my financial well-being, but rest assured that I do not have the majority of my net worth in the stock market. In fairness, I have also tried your approach. I piled into Infowave for all I was worth in the fall of 1999 and then placed GTC sell orders at $35, 40 and 45. They all triggered on the same day, March 10, 2000. Remember those days? While that worked out incredibly well, I ultimately concluded that was an imprudent strategy. I would not be able to get exposure to my desired allocation to the base metals and precious metals along a spectrum of company size/stage with 4-6 stocks, but I concede that I currently own too many mining stocks and too few in other sectors. Always something to work on, I guess.

My style is to hit big on a “best bet” and then get out.

:o)

Best one I've heard in a long time.

Cheers
