If your point is that we who live in democracies can't understand what needs to be done to change the mindset of those who have lived under tyrants, you may very well be right.

I like to think that all people over time will realize that they are better off with a system that is not run for the personal wealth of a tiny elite. Almost all systems of government have excesses.

The issue of the benevolent dictator and the righteous ruling class have been debated for at least 2000 years. We find these patterns throughout history.

There were many in the Colonies who opposed the US revolution, claiming that King George was benevolent and overall that order was better than chaos.

The interesting part of the story you posted, IMO, deals will nationalism and pride. Even though Saddam would be torn apart in the streets and brutalized, the people don't want the "foreigners" to display him. There is a lesson there and I hope the adminstration does as much as it can to get out of Iraq quickly. I hope the international community stops pussy footing around and switches from 100% criticism to real plans for cooperation and rebuilding Iraq and eliminating terror networks in the entire middle east.
