Ever major advance costs someone a job somewhere. I have noticed that secretarial jobs are drying up, never to be recovered, because employers figure that they can do with fewer, given the advanced nature of word processing and document storage with todays computer networks. Instead of a secretary, a lot of mid- level executives are given a terminal and sent to classes. Should we legislate against this trend?

Similarly, the postal service is being adversely affected by e- mail, causing downsizing. Should we ban e- mail? Doubtless, retailers are cutting floor jobs, in the face of e- commerce. In the state of New Jersey, self- service gasoline pumps are illegal, because the unions do not like to see jobs disappear. Why not ban e- commerce as "self- service retailing"?

Hey I think I've got it figured out how your statement could come to be true. In the last 2 years the US $ has gone from around 120 to under 90, representing a 25% loss of value. If Bush wins next year and that trend continues, there will come a time when US labor is actually cheaper because of the trashed US dollar.

Choose it by name. "the great sucking sound".
