"Many on the "left" have written extensively on the denial of rights to Japanese Americans - I'm not aware of many on the right who decry these abuses."

Denial of rights by FDR is decreyed by both libs and cons. It would be more pertinent to see what the political climate was back then. Conservatives back then were neanderthals so i doubt they were on the correct side. Most democrats supported it as i remember but i may be wrong. And those who opposed it, probably didnt speak up to loudly. I must do some reading on this when i get some time. mike
PS My point was and you prove my point that liberals to a man hate ashcroft and bush and many would allow Jose Padilla to walk the streets. Those same liberals for the most part did not challenge fdr or any other democrat who may do something they consider eggregious. Your failure to recognize this is shocking.

their internment was unconstitutional and a blot on our great country

I thought the whole country had come around to that, what with the reparations and all, not just the lefties. Just as the whole country has finally come around to the notion that blacks have equal rights.

None of which has anything to do with Padilla, who wasn't "interned" for his group identity but who got caught up in this still fuzzy area of the distinction between a terrorist and a criminal and an enemy combatant and a traitor and how all of that applies to citizens vs. non citizens and how where one is captured is relevant. Paradigm shifts take time to sort out...
