Got a clue as to what's wrong and how to fix it?

Is your computer downstream from a proxy server or a firewall?

I have a similar problem here with Window Media Player/Win 98 behind a Linksys Cable Modem/Router.

WMP apparently is fussy about networked computers. I don't have any problems with Real Networks or Winamp. Just the WMP.

If you're not running media player 9 you can get it at windows update and then go back to update and install the latest codecs. The media player usually downloads them automatically but sometimes fails. Could be your problem.
