A hallmark of fascism was hostility to economic change, and the proposal of a "third way" between capitalism and socialism that would harmonize all interests in the name of the state. It was exactly the class of small proprietors, who hated the rise of department stores and supermarkets, "corporate" farms and urban development, that formed the backbone of such movements.
