"The people backing Dean want to "negotiate" with these Islamists."
Harsh words but i suspect you are right. There is a certain naivite about the nature of the threat among democrats in general. However MB makes a good point regarding the overall cost of toppling saddam. I think he is wrong and i also think there will be dividends paid by saddams removal such as Libya surrendering without a shot being fired. IMHO, the real purpose of toppling saddam, the easiest of the difficult axis of evil states, is to send them a clear message to respect our power and our will to use it.
Libya already has and perhaps iran is waking up. mike

Lindy,
OBL by intelligence estimates seems to be alive. The worst about him is that he probably is sick.

If "Homeland Security" is a myth, then why are the states and local governments asking to beef up - in pursuant to the federal guidelines without a dime from feds. At a minimum there should be increased funding for coast guards and increased scrutiny of shipping containers at the port of entry.

Heck the local fire stations in DC are missing bare neccassities like Aspirin and critical gear to fight a fire, let alone fighting a calamity.

IMO, OBL chase should be of high profile (forget the Arab street if they complain - no need to win their hearts and minds - since we were attacked), arm twist the countries and their leaders who harbour terrorists. Much of it could have been done with a lower cost and would have given us many new allies in this fight. Nothing has been done satisfactorily in this regard. Think of pakistan who has been proliferating weapons to Iran and US has not been doing much to reigh it in. To his credit, Musharraf seems to harping peace pipe with India at the moment :-)
