Verizon selects Corning, others to supply fiber
Monday December 22, 10:34 am ET

CHICAGO, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - News), the No. 1 U.S. telephone company, said on Monday it selected Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW - News) and three other vendors for its project to wire homes and businesses with high-speed fiber-optic networks.

Verizon said Corning of Corning, New York; ADC Telecommunications Inc. (NasdaqNM:ADCT - News) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Preformed Line Products Co. of Cleveland, Ohio; and a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based business of Tyco International Ltd. (NYSE:TYC - News) will provide fiber-optic cabling and other outside plant equipment.

Verizon had announced plans to begin deploying the high-speed fiber-optic networks next year. The company said Monday's announcement completes the selection of suppliers.

In May, Verizon and two other Baby Bells agreed to a common set of technical standards to improve deployment of fiber-optic networks and speed the introduction of new services such as photo sharing and interactive gaming.

Last month, Verizon selected Advanced Fibre Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:AFCI - News), Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, Pirelli Communications Cables and Systems North America, and Fiber Optic Network Solutions for the project.

Verizon said Monday that its initial deployment plans involve about 1 million homes next year, with the pace potentially doubling in 2005.

In the first half of 2004, the company said it expects to begin initial test-deployments in at least two communities and by the end of the year expects to deploy the new technology in more than 100 central offices across nine states.

Jim, not to mention general cyberspace usage as people increasingly log on. Japan has high speed internet at low prices so people are downloading vast amounts of music and video and swishing stuff around the world. Same in Beijing, though in the very initial stages.

We are at the equivalent of the Spinning Jenny in the industrial revolution = It has only just begun. This isn't even the end of the beginning, it's the beginning of the beginning.
