I agree most American families are ready...But not prepared. We have most if not all of the disaster supplies we need. Most don't have it organized in a single location, ready for quick use, or to toss in a vehicle in the event an evacuation is necessary.

There is more than one way to address the battery issue. Here are a few suggestions:

Get self-charging items whenever possible such as the new flashlights and emergency radios that recharge with a few cranks of a handle.

LED flashlights are good too as they greatly extend battery life.

Consider items with solar powered chargers.

Keep a generator handy if possible. (Don't forget fuel.)

To conserve cell phone batteries in emergencies, we have established 1600-1700 EST as daily contact time for family members.
