Sometimes govt needs to spend money for something so clearly for the collective good. We are all for it when it comes to military spending for instance.

Maintaining a military defense is a specified responsibility and authority of the Federal government. It's right there in the Constitution. We don't do that just because we feel it's in the public good.

Other spending for the collective good is at the judgment of states and localities. Let them do it if they want and it makes sense. I earlier stipulated that I thought it made sense from a public health perspective for communities to vaccinate kids, for example. If a state or a community wants to provide cradle-to-grave health care out of tax moneys for its residents, that's its prerogative. Creating a Federal entitlement to free health care is wooly-headed, albeit well-intentioned.
