don't disagree with what you said -- just a minor pt about your phraseology, if I may

>>foist their views upon the unsuspecting<<

this is a well-worn phrase (as though, those in charge of the educational system at a federal level have NO AGENDA they are trying to "foist" upon kids)

But it brings up a larger issue for me with public education in general. Very little of k-12 public education has its goal of equiping children to THINK CRITICALLY. Unfortunately, much of it has to do with indoctrination -- and much of it far worse than the supposed indoctrination of "Judeo-Christian" principles, which was a part of public schooling for a good part of its history in the US.

My son is home-schooled -- To be honest, I do want to limit his exposure to some ideas and areas and things early on -- it is only natural for me to feel this way, but ultimately, I want him to be able to think CRITICALLY and to learn HOW TO LEARN and to ENJOY LEARNING -- so that he will be able to sift ALL knowledge he comes into contact with, to keep what is useful and good in his life, discard the rest and hopefully, be able to pursue what interests him to his own betterment and the betterment of those around him.
