Here is a post arguing the extreme seriousness of BSE

In the outbreak in England, it was hypothesized that nvKJD has a genetic component to the liklihood of infection. In other words, millions of Britons ate bad meat to no ill effect. Only the unlucky few were devastated by the wasting disease.

My sense is that the truth lies somewhere between Ann Veneman's disingenuous denials and the rather more hysterical views expressed by some of the "food police" anti-establishment.

I have heard horror stories about these rendering plants, which accept any carcass in any condition of decomposition.

If you think that's bad, you surely don't want to start reading about the U.S. Congress.

the Japanese standing by with unlimited money (40 trillion yen or $372 billion to prop up the dollar) it may not have the consequence it otherwise would have.

Your Bloomberg article is dated December 17. A later report that I haven't confirmed yet indicates the authorization value has been tripled to $1.3 Trillion. Enough to swing the U.S. election next fall.

Phil, apropos the BSE, I wonder if you have seen a chart of the beef price?

treasurestatefutures.com

(Feeder cattle)

What is interesting is the price started falling quite some time before the BSE announcement was made. Makes one think, doesn't it?!

And while we're about it, here's the price chart of Lean Hogs

treasurestatefutures.com

Looks ready for a rise. Mind you, with Chanuka having now officially taken the place of Christmas in the US, and Muslims all about to be either arrested or deported, one wonders who will buy the pork?
