I was a broker in my last life and i remember the seminars given by texas ranchers on cattle tax shelters, then legal but clearly immoral. As i remember it in order to take the loss, the cows had to die so then mad cow would have been a good thing i suppose. The real estate guys were pretty sleazy too, not to mention the "empty well" tax shelter oil crew, also from Texas. Mike

But the temptations to cheat or let things slide are enormous.

Let's remember that this cow was caught because the slaughterhouse involved was at risk of Mad Cow. They were processing old cattle.

The way the article reads, they had agreed to have the cattle tested by the US Dept of Agriculture. It was not a mandatory thing. We are probably very lucky that they did, because we will end up now with a mandatory test for all cattle being slaughtered.

PETA will be all over this.
