Monty had his moments. He was a bit too cautious at times. Patton didn't know when to keep his mouth shut. Both were very capable commanders. All in all, they both helped keep the press off Ike long enough for him to do his job, ...I'd say that's a pretty smart trade off! Give up the limelight just so you can get the job done.

It must have been very difficult for Ike to please a multi-national force like WW2 in Europe.

From what I've read of Ike over the years, his biggest problem was in pleasing General Marshall and FDR. In other words the war politics. If Ike would have let Patton fully act the war would have ended sooner with the likely result of the Soviet Union not owning half of Berlin and Germany for those many years.
