The more I think about it, it is probably some version of a firewall that is added to your settings. I've been having some problems with the Datek streamer through Zone Alarm.

I have set all my IE settings to the highest security through the Tools, Internet Options and shut off the ZAP firewall, leaving only the crummy MSFT firewall and Pest Patrol

On the ShieldsUp page which tests your system's vulnerability, I get a perfect reading and my Streamer is working fine.

In case anyone has not used that test page, I recommend it highly. grc.com

Go figure.

I only use Microsoft Internet Explorer on the few occasions when I visit a Microsoft site and they make you use it, since many of their sites don't work well with other browsers. Otherwise, I use Mozilla. It's an excellent browser, and you have complete flexibility on blocking popups. As I recall, from using AOL in the past, if you log on with AOL, then open another browser, you can browse the internet OK. Just an idea.

for some reason my installation of IE 6 says "custom" even though I never select "custom" during the multiple times that I reinstalled IE 6.

I've seen this happen when you run utilities such as Cookie Pal. For example, if you exit Cookie Pal and reset the security back to "default", the change only stays put until you run Cookie Pal again.

As for why your browser is crashing, the more clues the better. For example, aside from the particular circumstance you cited on SI, have you seen this problem at any other time? My quick guess would be that it has something to do with Java because of the GSP scripting command in the URL. Check Tools | Internet Options | [Advanced Tab] under "Microsoft VM" to see if the "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is checked.
