What can we do about Africa?
I have been interested for some time in ethical investing. Is it possible that ethical investing could help Africa? I don't know- I'm wondering. Surely there are businesses in Africa that are good businesses, by in large. I remember a friend of mine, who worked in Berkina Faso in the Peace Corps, telling me that they had the best mangoes she had ever tasted. Recently I checked out where the mangoes are coming from for the dried mangoes and jams at Costco- and they are coming from the Philippines. Why aren't they coming from Berkina Faso? What IS coming from Africa that we can invest in, that is sustainable, and that is providing a decent life? I'd like to stay away from mining, since that is degrading to the environment, and, at least when it is practiced in camps of single men, degrading to society as well.
