Any theistic proof is inadequate without tapping into self evidence. Self evidence is limited to a single case study. You can know about your self and generalize the known to what must be true of the human condition. And with that have the strongest form of self convincing evidence. Arguments to the contrary are futile as it is largely a flaw in a persons ability to trust their own instincts.

From what I have seen persons proclaiming an atheistic 'belief' are usually reacting to a bad experience that has left scars.

Drug abusers of the sixties often reported that their parents had condemned the use of marijuana as an evil and sick practice. I remember that the common reaction was to send the kid to a mental institution. The same drug abusers often grew up watching their parents get drunk every weekend or every time the day's work was done. The whole idea of alcohol/drug abuse became a winky winky (don't do as I do, do as I say) for some.

Likewise we have all witnessed, read about, or heard about corrupt religious fanatics abusing positions of trust, or incompetently proselytizing anyone nearby for the sake of some church score card.

Growing up with such devastating contradictions and hypocrisy can do some strange things to a person's ability to acknowledge belief in anything.
