Yes, for the most part it is factory operations and refeeding of protein offal and contaminated grains that spread BSE. The natural source in sheep, cattle has not been identified.

The role of illegal sale of contaminated and diseased meats is an unkown. Local butchery shops and restaurants are the worst culprits here as they buy the cheapest cuts possible from every Tom Dick and Harry with bad meat to sell. The scandal in Toronto with chicken recently exposed dozens of woefully contaminated and substandard plants.

Since we won't back away from Factory operations and widespread dissemination of mechanically deboned meats and making feeds from cattle offal for other animals, the only ways to protect ourselves are:

to become an organic vegetarian

-- and/or --

to eat only organic foods locally processed from reliable
farmers, such as:

Hutterites and Mormons (who eschew all manner of modern
practice)

-or-

certified organic farmers/ranchers who are local, have local
herds, and seem to evince a conscientiousness about animal
herd practices.

Seafood has been exposed as widely contaminated by PCB's and mercury that can only come from the absolutely shameful city and industry continental shelf dumping that goes on in every country, and the dumping of all manner of waste from shipping. There is no relief in the search for protein in the sea. The sea is "toast" it ould seem, and there is NO move to reduce the dumping. There should be an outcry, but the Kyoto on sea bed contamination is sadly absent.

Pretty soon it will be grow your own food, or eat crap and die.
