remittances totaled more than $32 billion annually

Amazing number!!!!

One has to wonder.....are all the poor countries in the world poor because they have no minerals, no oil, nothing of value to sell or barter???? Or or they poor because of the main religion in the country? Or are they poor because of the leadership (term losely used)????? If people of any nationality are the same everywhere (same range of IQ's, integrity, honesty, etc....) why are the same countries who have been desiginated a poor country for centuries, still poor?

I am talking about remittances -- the billions of dollars sent every year by migrants in the United States and elsewhere to their families in Latin America. By last count, remittances totaled more than $32 billion annually -- an amount so great that it surpasses foreign aid, trade and investment for several countries in the region and now has a place on the short list of the leaders' top considerations for regional economic growth.
