The global village is a great feel-good idea, which fails when in the grip of totalitarian entities like multinational corporations, if they're able to create and move markets on their own. A well-run multinational corp can trade with fascist dictators, run guns, encourage civil wars, and make lotsa money. But that's not the main problem. Its when they control elections... I'm all in favor of big unaccountable multinationals (wish I had one myself!). But if we are a gov't of/by/for the people, we can't let control of trade be ceded to cozy cronies, any more than to unelected gov't officials. The inevitable result is the usual whenever unaccountable power collects in too few hands -- the unrepresented get crushed. In this case, it's most of the American people who get crushed, while the well-capitalized can participate in the looting. Those of us on this board are lucky enough to be among the latter. But the overall policy trend is towards pushing down wages, encouraging illegal immigration, inflating equities, neutralizing gov't oversight on unethical and criminal behavior. It has a damaging effect on the culture as well, imo. We're in a financial Sodom & Gomorrah. Now, with sufficient realtime disclosure, regulation over illegal behavior, and tracking of every dollar, meeting and program of concern to the public, the various interests could be met and the "information market" not be rigged. We'll get there eventually, this is just the awkward stage, where the predators and prey get used to the idea of internet-type leveling of the playing field and refine the definition of what it means to make an honest living. The current corrupt cronies need to be thrown out, along with most of Congress, which will take time.
