Huey,

re:But I am considering going with Dell this time around for the service

I would definitely try a few phone calls to DELL's customer support and see if you can understand the dialect. You might spend some time searching the Internet and see how DELL's customer support is doing currently. From what I have read, DELL is having some serious issues.

If you are the leading dog with the best product and customer service, why are you offering zero percent financing?

Steve

well, I probably wouldn't buy 64 bits if I were you, unless it is within $100 of the 32-bit alternative (and it might be- the AMD 64 bit chip is only $200 which is less than a lot of P4s).

I was very dissatisfied with my last dell computer. The support was awful and the CDs have fans in them that sound like airplanes taking off. I just let it go because I don't use the CDs all that much and calling support was such a disaster. The speakers didn't work when I first got the system either. I'm not going to buy another Dell. I have decided my next machine will be the systemax brand from this vendor www.tigerdirect.com, which is their house brand and they are the #3 or #4 PC vendor - Dell, HP, eMachines and then tigerdirect according to my info.

One thing you should consider is downloading openoffice.org, or buying open office from Amazon or Star office from Amazon. These run on winXP. This gives you an alternative to ms Word which imho is almost unusable now. Another open source which is a huge improvement in app is Mozilla vs IE.

After I started using open office and mozilla I now realize I want to go total SuSE which IS available in 64 bits and you never know, next year you might make that decision too so it doesn't hurt to buy 64 bits since it is the same price. My ms office software is still slow and 64 bits speeds up those apps. Unfortunately I just bought this computer a few mos ago so I can't use the SuSE 64 bits, I regret buying this computer now.

Re: I am looking to buy a new computer this month.

Two points:

1) 64-bit registers/addressing allow Athlon 64, Operon, and Itanium to be more secure under windows (implemented in SP2). The new OS extensions, which will work even in 32-bit windows on 32-bit applications, will block a large class of exploits used by hackers and virus writers. Pentium 4, Xeon, and Athlon XP will not be able to take advantage of the new Windows security extensions.

2) Even if you go with a P4 or other 32-bit chip, you might want to re-consider going with Dell. Particularly in the past 6 months, they've really gone down hill.

resellerratings.com

Note the difference between their past rating and what's happened to the quality of their products and their service and support in the past 6 months.

Hi Hueyone, my sister's company has standardized on Dell purely for reasons of cost and time. At my startup, we've also standardized on Dell for the most part, and also have some HP and a Linux box of some sort.

I'm finding 32 bit too slow. And there are some other people in hightech that are cursing the slowness of 32 bit too, but many people don't. It really depends upon what you're doing. You should ask Elmer or Ten - they keep current on test results. The next machines we buy will probably be 64 bit.

I haven't had problems with either Dell or HP. Dell has a small business initiative and so a Dell SB person emailed me to make sure everything is AOK and just to let him know if I had any questions. He was in the USA.

At home, my Dell support came thru Malaysia - I had to get a bios update for a new printer and a very intelligent Malaysian person helped me out and fixed the issue. I found her quicker than some of the USA support I've received. For example, she didn't ask me to reinstall windows : ) After the phone call, I was thinking it would be nice if she worked here.

Regards,
Amy J
