I don't have a Garner's but have put it on my "If it can be had cheaply, it will be had" list. I see that a reviewer considers it a replacement for Fowler's who they say has become outdated. I don't know that I agree. The changes in American language happen a little too fast for me. I refuse to use "disrespect" as a verb or describe something as "bootylicious" and I still won't refer to children as "kids" when I write. "Impactful" cracked me up- perfect example!

Kingsley Amis writes in The King's English that "a canny Shakespearean scholar would know it was sound policy (as well as entertaining) to see first what Samuel Johnson had to say on a given passage before turning to more recent commentators. The same and more besides should apply to Fowler in his own sphere."
