Electroluminescence is literally a "cool" concept, because it does not produce heat. The hitch: only flat surfaces of limited size could be achieved in the past. But Smart Surface Technology now makes it possible for the films to be shaped as needed and thus to illuminate any conceivable geometry.

A prototype 'business bag' was unveiled last September.

In April, BREE plans to sell its first two electroluminescent leather-and-nylon bags, for €250 ($315) and €400 respectively. The bags aren't sold in the U.S., but shoppers will find them at BREE stores in Europe, Asia and Canada. American buyers can order the bags through Taschen Inc., in Toronto, the company says.
