Eric as you rightly put it Getty was/is a high tonnage low grade copper deposit suitable for heap leaching and electro-winning. I think at one stage they did get some concession on cheap hydro, but I expect that deal had lapsed. The lever they had with the BC government was that Highland Valley is almost exhausted and will be closing down which left a big hole in the economy of the region. However Highland Valley was playing hardball and disinterested and Getty was playing coy and hard to get.

When copper prices collapsed all deals real or imagined along with Getty's share price went down with it and Getty's copper stayed right where it was, in the ground.

Now copper is up, Highland Valley has new (part) owners and the problem of it being mined out hasn't gone away and Getty has copper close enough to fill some of the gaps in the local economy. A deal is again possible that would be useful to all the parties if only it can be done.
