yeah but 81-83 was a froth period, a bubble for tech. Believe me, if Oracle *could* have gone public then they would have.

I guess you missed all the discussions we had here and elsewhere on the PC bubble in the early 80s. I feel lucky that I barely remember it. I was in high school, but because I lived in the bay area and had a few summer jobs in tech I can recall whereas most high school people wouldn't be able to. Despite all the claims that the 90s bubble was a once in a lifetime phenom, the early 80s sure felt similar with any tech name IPOing and all these 100K Porches (in early 80s money) showing up on 101 with license plates like "THX CPM". The total dollar amount was different of course but so far we are following the same pattern- a brutal retrench and some new leaders, plus resurgence of the old ones. Amazon being like Apple then, and maybe Google like msft. There are probably other analogies. Anyway back to oracle, Larry was always a greedy egomaniac and I'm sure he would have loved to have benefitted from the hype then, but with no product/sales he couldn't.
