I didn't hear it. I prefer to take my Bush in written form. I expect to be disappointed, too. But not in quite the same way you are. I understand how offensive rewarding illegals must be to you.

I'm second generation American. My family came here from Eastern Europe just about a hundred years ago, back when the doors were still wide open.

The argument that illegals do the work Americans won't is laughable and racist. It only works if you believe Mexicans are stupid monkeys capable only of picking up and carrying heavy things.

If you don't believe that, then why would you believe, when given free entree to the entire American job market, Mexicans will continue to do those jobs either?

Kumar, perhaps we should "be more cynical" about what Bush is proposing. When you take the "smiley face" off, the implementation may be good.

What is being proposed is a way to get Illegals to register with the Government on a voluntary basis. No need to chase them. The ones that don't register then are then easier targets.

We will then have them on file, and easier to track. If they try to stay without complying, they will be easier to find.

They are here, and we are doing nothing at the moment. Attempts to deport them all will not work. Probably this is the best compromise.

Here is a classic double standard case, Kumar. Imagine the outcry if Tom DeLay had told this joke.

Hil's Gandhi gas jockey joke
fuels row

She said WHAT???
Sen. Hillary Clinton's mouth got her into trouble after she joked that legendary Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi was someone who "ran a gas station down in St. Louis."

Appearing at a weekend political fund-raiser in Missouri for an underdog Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, the New York Democrat tossed out the condescending comment before using a famous Gandhi quote about determination.

Her suggestion that Gandhi was a pump jockey drew snickers from the crowd of 200, and she tried to soften some of the bite, interjecting, "No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century."

Then she borrowed words from Gandhi that she hoped would define the Senate campaign of Nancy Farmer, Missouri's state treasurer, against a Republican incumbent: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

Clinton apologized yesterday, insisting she holds Gandhi in high esteem.

"I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times," she said in a statement.

"I truly regret if a lame attempt at humor suggested otherwise," added Clinton, who visited India when she was First Lady.

But her snideness still stung.

"Political speeches can't be like episodes of 'The Simpsons,'" said David Robertson, a University of Missouri-St. Louis political science professor.

"It is an off-color comment - one that is certainly upsetting," added Chris Dumm, a spokesman for the Washington-based Indian American Center for Political Awareness.

He said her comment perpetuated an ethnic stereotype, but added, "I think the senator's apology is genuine."

Clinton's aides noted yesterday that a school in Rampur, India, is being named after her: the Hillary Rodham Clinton Centre for Multimedia Technology.
