I would absolutely agree with your statement if we were in normal times. Post 9-11 I think most people feel the need to be protected, and who better than a general in that situation?

I think the general public have more respect for an ex-doctor than an ex military man.

9/11 changed the way we think in many ways. Now the thinking of the general public is to have more respect for a ex-general than a ex-doctor. Firmness with a compassion is what is need.
