That is strong support for the evolutionary theory of punctuated equilibrium. There were two fundamental sets of scientific information that had not been discovered in the days of Darwin. One was that continents had been a single mass, broke apart, reformed, broke again and otherwise carried separate groups of organisms far and wide. The other was the age of the earth. Radiation had not been discovered and so the earth was assumed to be about 100 million years old, just long enough to have cooled to it's present temperature from a molten state. TP
