Yes, I respect this take too. Friedman has been running scared, very literally and visibly scared, of the conclusions of his own arguments. "The devil is dancing our way" he said once, but he still clings to the hope that we can scare the devil with firecrackers, while persuading it not to be a devil. There are some segments of Arab societies that have really drunk the Kool-Aid, that are proclaiming in all seriousness, "we will destroy you unless you destroy us first." In such cases it may indeed be necessary to speed their martyrdom. In cases where they have widespread support, it may be necessary to do so with enough violence that the population is cowed. I hope not. But if one of these nutcases does manage to set off a dirty bomb in America (G-d forbid), Americans are going to have near zero tolerance for more shots of Saudis, Egyptians or Palestinians handing out candy in the street.
