"If I hadn't done that (worked 65 hours a week while taking a full course load in college, while volunteering time), I might not have a job either now"

A) That seems impossible.
B) Keep that up and you will be a rich man (if money is what you are after).
C) I think it can be done in America on 40 hours a week or less, but have no problem with over achievers.

"Some of our tax money should go towards rehabilitating these people, or at least getting them in shelters"

I agree with this to a certain extent. I say use a tough love approach and get them off the street physically, but offer some training, rehab and shelter to give them another chance. If they don't embrace that, then its jail. If I can't even camp in an undesignated camp ground, they should not be able to eat, sleep, piss and crap on our public streets. Help them and the public. If they refuse it, tough crap. They are a danger to themselves and the public.

"Me, a fool? Nah"

The jury is still out. Maybe just idealistic and naive.
