As for imposing our politics on the region - Certainly we have been involved in the region but outside of Iraq we haven't been that forceful about it. As for aid, if our aid has conditions then the recipents still have the option of rejecting the aid.

Tim, I don't agree. We have bases in Turkey, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to name three ME states. We sent Marines into Lebanon in the 80s to participate in their civil war. We helped orchestrate the overthrow of the Shah in Iran. We attacked Iranian ships in the Arabian Gulf during the 80s. We defended Kuwait in the Gulf War.

These are just a few of our interventions in the ME. And who knows what the CIA was doing.
