Even Bill Gates' Dad was talking publicly a couple of years ago about how he was against cuts. I think there are rich people that are quite a bit disgusted. The issue is more about people's philosophies. Sure, some people operate under the greedy-b philosophy - but it's not guaranteed these are only wealthy folks - maybe they are also unwealthy folks who perceive they can't afford to contribute. Also, most people who are wealthy do not seem to associate themselves as wealthy - simply because there's always someone wealthier. There's this one VC who was complaining to me about how he had to stop the cranes from building goodness-knows-what when the stock market crashed and hurt his personal finances. I am by nature an empathetic person and could see he was in pain, but on hindsight, I'm thinking geez. Some people feel that private charities can operate better than the government, which is true, but my belief is there are too many holes and gaps that get created. The gov't should revamp the entire system and make all citizens (including kids) participate in community service to drive down costs. It seems foolish not to have mandatory volunteering in the schools and for everyone else, in order to drive costs down. Too bad stock options on this country couldn't be created & handed out for mandatory volunteering, tied to the GDP growth. If costs go down, GDP goes up and options go up? What's the financial instrument of an option on a country? If bonds are debt, what's the equity structure of an option on a country? Hm. RE: "Reagan had cut off funding for mental hospitals, some welfare, medical benefits etc, and suddenly, all these misfits were let onto the streets." That was the worst move. One really strange thing about the Bay Area, for an area that is generally more sensitive, it treats the mentally ill not so good. Agnews gets kicked out, etc. A lady I know had to fight to maintain her handicapped child in one of the schools here, she created a law a decade ago so it wouldn't happen to others. It's funny how this area can be really nice, and yet not so nice to the handicapped people. Regards, Amy J
