Here's a description of him and his tribe: >>>>>>The Nez Percé, whose ancestral home had been in the Wallowa Valley for thousands of years, were forced from their homelands through a series of treaties with the United States government. When Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Percé said they would not leave, the government came to remove them. A chase ensued and the Nez Percé were nearly to Canada before they surrendered. The tiny band of warriors and their families were wounded, cold and starving when Chief Joseph surrendered. The simple and plaintive surrender speech by Chief Joseph is recognized as one of the most eloquent speeches in American history.<<<<<<amazon.com In the book which I read long ago, there was a scene where the Christian missionaries, who had become the village leaders, convinced the Indians that they bring their horses east in order to trade them for cattle. So a missionary took charge of a group that began hearding the horses east. During the journey they came against a competing indian tribe which surrounded and bogged the group down behind rocks. Some white men who were riding with the attacking indians rode forward on their horses with a white flag. The missionary leading the horse herd came forward to meet the white men. Their leader said to the missionary, [paraphrased] "Hey, in order for you white men to live, all you gotta to do is give up your redskinned friends to my friends." Guess what the Christian missionary did? And then there's also the matter of the Christians giving to the indians cholera-ridden blankets--perhaps the very first example of weapons of mass destruction being used.
