But I think the country was better off, in many ways, when family businesses flourished.

Maybe. There is something that is appealing about that day; yet my wife is at WalMart buying groceries at this very moment. When I was a kid, our small town grocery store delivered the groceries to our house.

At the same time, I have profited hugely in the last year from owning stock in XM Satellite Radio, which surely is bringing about the end of AM/FM radio. And why? Because XM brings us a far superior product. Superior in every last respect.

So, while I hate to see the town square abolished, just out of nostalgia, the reality is that people go to WalMart because it better suits their needs, and they listen to XM Radio because it is a much better product.

I really can't find fault with these changes that really make our lives better, even though some people get wealthy in the process. Besides, what is more American than being a stockholder in your favorite business? Frankly, I suspect I'll be retired before I'm 50 on the profits from my XM stock. Is that going to make me a bad person?
