why is Fetch a dog?

I put a "(g)" after that. It's a dog (g) because that's the icon into which the pointer arrow turns, when the program "runs and fetches". (g)

The simplest alternative to Fetch is to just type cmd-K in the Finder (Connect to Server) and type ftp://ftp.whatever.com/, and it will mount on your desktop. You can drag-drop from that.
