In South Carolina and elsewhere, Democrats were questioning Dean's political judgment after a bombastic election-night speech.

"He must not be thinking. He's heading to New Hampshire and those people are serious-minded. They're going to be thinking, 'Who's that cat?'" said Waring Howe Jr., a Charleston, S.C., lawyer and member of the Democratic National Committee.

Dean said he was simply firing up his supporters. New Hampshire is a critical test of Dean's ability to persuade Democrats that he is back on track and capable of filling what polls show is their greatest desire: Beating Bush.

"He gets third place in New Hampshire and he'll be flipping pancakes with Dick Gephardt somewhere," said Howe, who has yet to endorse.

Ann, interesting news item. It is good to see that the Democratic party is not a party of coronation. The more this thing remains alive, the more it goes to show that people are really interested in seeing a new face in the WH and that they are actively engaged in discussing who the best fit is going to be for the WH. On the contrary, if they all had jobs and the economy was fine, then they would not have the time to attend the primaries and caucuses. What is significant is that in Iowa even the labor voted for Kerry and not Gephardt, whom the labor leaders had endorsed. You see, the labor leaders are fat and happy and the union work keeps them employed. That is why they go out and endorse people like Gephardt. But the rank and file are out of work and they want to make sure that they send someone who can bring in something new.

Yes indeed, it was very Presidential for Dean to act the way he did on TV yesterday. You could even see Sen. Tom Harkin in the background feeling a bit embarassed, pretending and signalling that Dean could not be heard.
