Yes, and I understand that it is a longstanding tenet of conservatism to embrace balanced budgets. However, on that score, they were wrong, and liberals were right: borrowing is, in some cases, preferable to either paying directly out of current revenues, or having to wait and save. Businesses do it all the time, as do consumers, especially on durable items that they might otherwise have to rent. Once you give up the shibboleth of balanced budgets, it becomes merely a matter of long term manageability, and whether one is spending wisely..........
