I looked at a map of the provinces positive for Influenza A in Vietnam. 5 fatal patients have been sub-typed and all are H5N1, so it seems likely that most if not all of the early pediatric cases will be H5N1. The positive provinces ring Hanoi and go all the way to the Gulf of Tonkin (and include Vihn Phuc which had bird flu back in July).

I wonder if Hong Kong birds were brought to northern Vietnam by boat and then moved up the Red River, leaving a trail of H5N1 infections.

In view of allegations of H5N1 outbreaks in northern Vietnam since July and Thailand since November, a November request for more information on avian flu in Indonesia may be relevant

On the 36th anniversary of the Tet Offensive in south Vietnam, media reports on H5N1 avian flu in southeast Asia certainly sound like the Domino Theory in action

There is circumstantial evidence suggesting that the current H5N1 avian flu outbreak may trace back to Fujian Province, Beijing's denials not withstanding.

Looks like avian flu (H5N1) is well out of control. First set of sequences are in from Vietnamese children and lots of mutations. No vaccines in a few weeks.
