mish,

as thesee bonds change hands between institutions etc. they pretty much need to know if the government is going to continue to pay the interest on them. otherwise the poor suckers that just bought these bonds got screwed, and it could be a big institution or a pension fund. so maybe someone's parents will have no retirement now because the government decided to stop paying interest early on long term bonds?

this is symptomatic of bigger problems and the dollar is reacting accordingly. we're doomed

The Bonds were issued with a 5/15/2004 call provision. They are simply excercising that provision as they should.
