<<What really astonishes me is how the president can talk about the moon and Mars while pulling the plug on the Hubble
Space Telescope. Is this the Bush vision?>>

This whole moon, Mars business is military, not scientific.

The Chinese are beginning to explore space. Bush and Cheney don't want them to beat us to militarizing the moon.

It's that simple, really.

There's definitely someone dumb here, but it isn't George.

Famous example. The compund now known as Teflon was known long before the space. The problem was that it was so inert that it could not be made to stick to anything. A compound with its properties was needed. A way was found to use it as a coating. How many billions do you think that was worth.

ICs with 4 or 5 transistors used to cost hundreds of dollars. There were bascially 2 customers: DOD for military avionics and NASA for space. Weight COUNTS in a satellite. The ONLY cutomers and the only funds for further development were those two.

How much is Silicon Valley worth now?

If Isaballa had waited for ALL the problems in Spain to be solved before financinag that Italian navigator, where would you be now?
